Germplasm Screening: One hundred and fifty accessions consisting indigenous and exotic lines were analyzed for iron and zinc concentration. In brown rice, the iron concentration ranged from 7.7 µg/g (Varakkal) to 22.4 µg/g (IG 51) and zinc concentration ranged from 9.7 (IG 41) µg/g to 33.9 µg/g (Vadakathi samba). In polished rice, the iron concentration ranged from 3.6 µg/g (IR36) to 13.9 µg/g (Rama Kuruvaikar) and zinc concentration ranged from 8.1 µg/g (IR36) to 20.1µg/g (RPHP104).

Bi-parental Mapping population development: Based on the performance of genotypes in terms of zinc content, a set of genotypes were utilized in crossing programme to develop mapping population viz., Vadakathi samba,  IG 39(EC 728779- 117750), IR 36 , CO(R)51 (High Yielding Variety), Kodai  and RPHP 48.

Evaluation of protein and folate: Twelve high folate lines were identified. Folate content ranged from 25-30 micrograms/100g of whole grain in accessions namely CK275, Mappillai samba, Senkar, Murugankar and IR64.

Multiplication of high folate and protein genotypes:  High folate and protein lines (Mapillai samba and CK 275) and low folate and protein lines (IG 29 and Katta samba) were raised in crossing block for further development of  mapping population

Germplasm maintenance: A set of 150 genotypes used for association mapping panel has been raised for maintenance.

SNP discovery for iron, zinc, folate and protein in rice: Out of the available 150 germplasm including land races and improved varieties which have been phenotyped, 110 genotypes were employed for SNP discovery using Fluidgm SNP genotyping system. So far 96 SNP primers were used and results obtained. Further after running about 1000 SNP primers, analysis will be done for association mapping.
